Which Woolwich Stories (Theme: Awareness)

This exhibition was done in 2023.

Woolwich has always been a place of movement, people arriving, cultures meeting, and identities evolving. As both an artist and a longtime resident, I have witnessed how the growing diversity of this community has transformed its cultural landscape. Over the years, Woolwich has become a vibrant destination for both domestic and international visitors, enriched by the traditions, stories, and creativity of the people who call it home. 

My artistic practice is rooted in this lived experience. It was here in Woolwich that I first encountered dishes, customs, and expressions from cultures far beyond my own. The accessibility of global food within Woolwich Public Market, from street stalls to family run shops, meant that residents didn’t need to travel far to experience the world. Through these everyday interactions, I learned that engaging with another person’s culture fosters empathy, understanding, and ultimately, stronger community cohesion. 

This body of work, titled Awareness, Awareness 1 & 2, is my response to that journey. I wanted to create an art piece that captures the heterogeneous history of Woolwich, a history shaped by migration, resilience, and shared humanity. The artworks incorporate African Caribbean natural materials and markings, grounding the pieces in the textures and symbolism of my own heritage while inviting viewers to reflect on their own. 

I intend to open doors: to introduce African and Caribbean shops not only to their usual customers, but to those who might never think to step inside. Woolwich has become a home for so many, a place where people can reconnect with their cultural identity while also discovering others. That coexistence, the ability to hold multiple identities in one shared space, is what makes Woolwich a truly remarkable place to live. 

Through these works, I hope to inspire the community and future generations to recognise the beauty of diversity, the value of inclusion, and the power of cultural exchange.
