The Impact of Pollution on Bonny Island

Exhibition date: to be confirmed.

Bonny Island is a Local Government Area situated at the southern edge of Rivers State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, near Port Harcourt. The local dialect spoken in Bonny Island is the Ibani language.

Located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on the Bight of Biafra, the island of Bonny serves as the seat of a traditional state known as the Kingdom of Bonny.

Bonny Island, located in Rivers State, Nigeria, is a major hub for oil and gas operations — including the NLNG plant and several multinational oil facilities. Unsurprisingly, this industrial concentration has led to significant environmental pollution, especially in the air and groundwater.

Pollution in Bonny Island creates a chain reaction:

  • Contaminated soil → polluted groundwater → polluted rivers/creeks → polluted sea
  • Polluted sea → reduced fish stocks → food insecurity
  • Polluted soil → poor crop yield → economic hardship

Each art piece shows how pollution has affected rivers, seas, marine life and soil within the Bonny Kingdom.
